The
campaign
is three fold...
First, to raise the publics awareness
to the extent of the scam mail
problem
by trying to place the
Don't
Be A Scam Mail Victim posters in as many public places
as possible. Whilst we have no funding, local organisations all around
the UK can download the poster in pdf format and have them printed off
in A3 or A4 and in quantities to suit their budget. The website will
be an invaluable tool but the telephone message is a must for the victims
and thousands of potential victims who don't have access to the internet.
Second, to make the Royal Mail accept that they have a duty of care
towards vulnerable people and take an active role in the early
recognition of a victim.
research
tells us that Royal Mail delivery people easily recognise when someone
is being targeted by scammers. All that were interviewed said they objected
to being used as mules but there isn't a procedure in place for them to start
the alarm bells ringing. A simple Scam Mail Notification Form for them to hand
into their manager, is all it would take to involve agencies such as Social
Services and Age Concern. The Royal Mail will still get to make their delivery
and the victim could be provided with early professional help.
In the long term, to bring about the introduction of legislation to prevent scammers hiding behind PO Boxes.
At present the Royal Mail do not acknowledge the fact that scam mail or criminal mail is causing a major problem in the UK, as you will find by visiting their website, there isn't one mention about it.
